African American Leadership Development
The African American Leadership Development Program (AALDP) was established in October, 2001. AALDP’s mission is to provide greater training and advancement opportunities for more African American professionals, including young African American professionals, in the greater Pittsburgh region. The goals of the AALDP are to establish an African American Leadership Directory II; to establish the Urban League Young Professionals of Pittsburgh; to establish a Newcomer’s Initiative; and to produce the bridge, an African American Guide to Pittsburgh.
The African American Leadership Directory II (Directory II)
Directory II is a community resource guide for corporations, organizations and government entities to be able to identify key local talent for board placement opportunities and other professional network opportunities (i.e. seminars, job fairs) for established and/or young African American professionals. To view Directory II, go to http://www.unitedwaypittsburgh.org/FindHelp.aspx?id=196#leadership
The Establishment of Urban League Young Professionals (ULYP–Pittsburgh)
ULYP-Pittsburgh was established as an auxiliary of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh on February 20, 2002. This developing force is composed of talented young professionals (ages of 21 to 39) who are committed to serving the greater Pittsburgh region through social and civic engagement. AALDP offers board training and other professional development opportunities to members of ULYP-Pittsburgh to help further develop young leaders within Southwestern Pennsylvania. In addition, AALDP provides job linkages to members of ULYP-Pittsburgh. AALDP solicits mentors for ULYP-Pittsburgh members.
Newcomer’s Initiative
The Newcomer’s Initiative was established to attract, retain and orient African American professionals who are prospective newcomers to the greater Pittsburgh region in a more culturally sensitive way. The initiative helps assimilate African American professionals who have become residents of Pittsburgh. In addition, it links prospective new recruits to existing local African American networks (i.e. members of African American Leadership Directory and the Urban League Young Professionals) and personal and professional resources that work in collaboration with the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh.
